How to Draw a Car for Beginners: Using Simple Shapes

Sharing how to draw our favorite cars with the help of squares, together with the knowledge points of drawing cars down below

●Disassembling the basic form of the car

All vehicle structures can be broken down into simple geometric generalizations such as squares, circles and cylinders.
If you've played Lego before, it's easier to understand the concept of building Lego with different sized blocks to form the shape we want.

Using geometry helps us to simplify complex structures and to focus more on the big issues (constructing perspective, checking for inverse perspective).

The position of the black dots in the diagram helps us to check the relative position of the line segments.

The illustration (tractor) splits the body into a box, and square (tire) base structure.

Before drawing the car, it is recommended to understand the car body as a whole from the three-view drawing.
Like the following three-view example, the overall length to width ratio is about 1:2.

● Structural relationship between the front end and the body of the vehicle

Pay attention to the length-to-width ratio of the car, observe the overall structure of the front end and the body, and replace complicated parts with simple shapes (such as rectangles or trapezoids), like a curved body.
It is difficult to draw curved lines directly, but if we generalize to straight lines, it will be easier for us to check whether the perspective is skewed or not.

Attach the body contour to the wheels, taking care that the wheels are aligned with the contact points on the ground.

If you want to draw a tilted body, you should also pay attention to whether the lines in the same direction converge to the vanishing point.
The pickup trucks have a rectangular body with a square shape to create the geometry of the vehicle.
The wheels correspond to the body of the car, and draw the position of the wheel cut-outs.
Again, a rectangular body is used as the main body, with a square shape (tires) to create the geometry of the vehicle.

● Application of two-point perspective

The whole car body can be seen in perspective to present a sense of three-dimensionality, imagined as a square box turned at an angle, and the car body can be seen in perspective to present a sense of three-dimensionality.
First set the direction of the vanishing point, and converge the lines in the same direction at the vanishing point just set, and pay attention to the principle of perspective of near big and far small when drawing the car body.

Tractors use two-point perspective, with the left and right wheels and the front and back of the vehicle pointing to two different vanishing points.

This article describes how to draw perspective.

● Line application and refinement

Understanding the difference between a first draft and a final draft

  • The first draft: mainly light tracing lines, roughly capture the structure and perspective of the car body.
  • Finished draft: on the basis of the first draft, thicken the contour, improve the details of the shape changes, and emphasize the three-dimensionality of the vehicle.
Pay attention to the contour lines, structural lines, light and heavy colors, so that the picture has an order to guide the vision.

The shape of the structure is divided into the following points.

  • Starting with the largest outer contour shape, pay attention to the large scale and perspective at the beginning to see if there is any obvious distortion.
  • Simplify complex shapes, for example, round to square, organic curves to straight lines.
  • After making sure that there are no major problems with the whole, gradually start to load the small parts, or pay attention to whether the small parts need to be shared with the main body perspective, such as tires, rear mirror.
